Their name appears because they were still a Registered Manager on our register at the time. We checked on the safety and suitability of the accommodation and environment. We saw the shared areas were clean and tidy and bedrooms were well decorated and personalised by individuals who used the service. This was entirely due to the efforts of the manager and all the staff, who allowed me to feel comfortable and relaxed within the home environment, with the added bonus of a private one to one visit with Mum. A comprehensive care plan is formulated for each resident which reflects their individual needs. All homes are fully registered with the Care Quality Commission and the local authority. You can make a complaint to the manager of the home, the registered manager will follow this through accordingly. People who used the service and family members had also made comments that the home had ‘given devoted care over many years’ and staff were ‘kind and helpful and it is more than just a job’.

People’s diet needs were fully met and any issues arising were reported to health care professionals for additional support. Staff were suitably skilled to meet people’s needs and there was a robust recruitment procedure in place. There were enough staff to support people and call bells were answered within suitable timescales. We make sure our residents start the day right with a filling breakfast including cereals, fruit, toast and porridge, plus a daily changing choice of hot options. Our Residents are welcome to have breakfast any time they desire, and we are happy to accommodate their morning schedule.
A challenge we all face as we get older is to think about where we live, and how it will work for us when we’re older. The manager and staff team have made her feel at home, at first. It was very upsetting for her and her family, but the staff team have done a fantastic job, and she is now quite settled and getting good quality care. People's needs had been assessed before they moved into the home.
People and their relatives knew how to make a complaint if they were unhappy. We saw that three complaints had been recorded, investigated and resolved to the satisfaction of the complainant within the last 12 months. There were a number of people subject to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and these had been managed well by the service with referrals for local authority authorisation being made appropriately. The service had a system in place to ensure that renewals were requested promptly. They were safeguarded from abuse by staff who had been trained in this area. Any accidents or incidents were monitored and any lessons learnt were acted upon.

This helped to ensure that people received a good quality service at all times. People were supported to eat and drink and maintain a balanced diet. The service monitored people’s weights and took further action if needed. Visiting health care professionals told us the care and support offered was effective.
Whorlton Grange is a Georgian house situated in its own landscaped grounds in the village of Whorlton near Barnard Castle. The home does have an extension to the main house and provides both single and double room accommodation. All of the rooms are spacious and vary in size due to the age of the building. Passenger and stair lifts provide access to the first floor and specialist bathing facilities are available. At the time of writing this report fees for living at the home range from £382.50 per week for residential care and £402.50 per week for dementia care. Larger rooms and rooms with en-suite facilities have an additional charge of £20 per week.
The building was clean, well maintained and secure and other appropriate measures were in place to ensure the security of the premises. We Care Group provides dementia care in both a residential and nursing setting. Each of our homes that support people living with dementia is uniquely designed to make residents feel comfortable in their homes. Corridors are filled with photos and murals to evoke fond memories from the past as well as memorabilia to encourage stimulation. Colours are used throughout the home to create positive associations and trigger the right response to a situation and the food and menus are designed to cater specifically for residents with dementia. Several of our homes even have a dementia garden creating a sensory experience in a beautiful setting.
Between Breakfast and Lunch, we offer mid-morning cake and coffee. The hardest decision we, as a family, had to make was to place Mum into care, made so much harder by the fact covid was about and we couldn’t see the care home or meet the staff, in person. Sadly, Mum’s dementia progressed very rapidly and she became totally dependent on carers for all her needs and the staff did not fail her. The manager and her amazing staff not only went over and above the care expected in a residential home to make Mum comfortable, they also took care of us as a family. People who used the service and also family members spoken to, said they had seen care plans, that they were consulted about changes to care and the home included them in reviews of care plans.
The staff work so hard to keep our loved ones happy, and it’s so nice knowing he is getting well looked after and he has great banter with the staff. Yes, we have access to GPs at all times and for emergencies, we have a Hospital close by ambulance. If not, there are several good GP practices nearby where some of our residents are registered. We encourage residents to give us feedback on the food at the regular Residents’ meetings.
These older reports are from our old approaches to inspection, including those from before CQC was created. Audits were carried out regularly to ensure that staff were competent and that any errors would be quickly identified. There was a manager in place who was in the process of registering with the CQC but before the inspection was completed, we were informed they had resigned. The previous manager’s registration was still in place and they were going to maintain an overview of the service until a replacement was found. Various tailored activities were available at the service, including regular entertainers and involvement in community events.
